An etiquette guide to public barbecues

Picture this; the sun is shining, you've packed your salads and meat (or meat-free) fare and you head to the park... only to discover all the barbecues are taken!

Some are in use, but others have been staked out, often for hours, by people who aren't even using them.

It's a frustrating situation that many of us are unfortunately familiar with and can ruin an otherwise perfect day.

But how can we avoid it? What can be done to ensure everyone gets their fair go?

Respected Australian etiquette expert June Dally-Watkins says the answer is people need to think more about each other.

"People must be aware of other human beings, they must be courteous, they must be kind and considerate," she says.

Guidelines to a better barbecue

June suggests some simple guidelines to follow;

  • Don't be selfish! Be kind and share public facilities.
  • Be mindful who is next and try not to monopolise the barbecue.
  • Be considerate of other people's celebrations around you.
  • Clean up after yourself and don't leave a mess for others.

June also advises people to be aware not to drink too much.

"Don't have too much red wine, don't have too much beer, don't get drunk," she says.

"That is a very big consideration and it's another way to consider other people."

One man's meat is another man's poison

Chances are you may encounter people who do not agree with your views on etiquette and will not compromise.

In that case June says it may be safer for you to let it go and not potentially escalate the situation.

"Don't go up and say you're behaving badly, you've been drinking too much, or don't do that," she says.

"It's better to walk away."

In the end, June says if we are all more considerate, thoughtful and kind at all times, everyone will benefit.
