We are moving into a dry time of year in Washington. Even though we have wet, heavy winters, our climate regularly goes three months without any significant rainfall. This means that we need to be vigilant about watering, through the summer months, in order to maintain a green healthy lawn and landscape. And everyone wants a gorgeous, thriving landscape all summer long… but you can do it without running up the water bill!

Be a Water-Wise Gardener this summer!

You can save time and money with just a little bit of skill when you water your yard. Watering wisely is not only good for the pocket book. It is healthier for the environment and our entire watershed. It is ultimately better for your plants as well. If you follow these techniques, your plants will have deeper roots and healthier growth. Water-Wise Gardening is widely practiced in many dry climates but we can still apply these techniques here for healthier plants, planet and wallet.

Here are a few tips for conserving water:

  • Water plants in the early morning or evening, when it’s cool. This decreases evaporation and prevents leaf burn.
  • We recommend watering close to the roots of plants, when possible. Avoid overhead watering and hose-attachment sprinklers. A lot of that water goes into the air or lands on your driveway. It can also just settle on the tops of plants where it can do more harm than good.
  • Wait to plant new plants until the fall when the soil is cooler. Or, if you do plant now, plant native plants that can tolerate dry summers.
  • Add mulch to the base of plants and anywhere you have bare soil. This will lock moisture into the soil and keep plant roots cool. It also creates a clean, attractive look for your yard!
  • Have a smart-controlled sprinkler system installed. These systems can be configured to your climate and plants needs to make sure they get the right amount of water without much waste. DeWitt Landscaping installs all types of irrigation systems for residential and commercial properties. Click here to learn more.
