Landscaping experts say not too late to protect trees from cold

HARRISON TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WDTN) – Wind, cold and snow can be harsh on your trees and shrubbery, which is why landscaping experts say prevention is key.
Workers at Bladecutter’s say with the cold and snow blanketing the area, it’s not too late to protect your landscaping with some sheets and stakes.
High winds and lower temperatures can cause branches to rub up against each other and snap. The cold can also damage small shrubs and can even end up killing them.
With evergreens, experts say burnt orange needles signify damage.
Workers say salt can get down to the roots of trees and cause them to lose moisture, dry out, and die, making some think twice about salting their sidewalks.
While they say prevention is important, taking steps now can keep you from losing your shrubs when spring returns.
“Over the winter, they lose moisture so you want to make sure you do plenty of fall prep, and then in the winter, protect them with burlap with other sacks, staking and even tree protection,” said Jon Meintel, Vice President of Sales and Operations at Bladecutter’s.
Experts say winter is a good time to prune when trees are dormant.
