How Artificial Grass Lowers Your Maintenance Costs

How Artificial Grass Lowers Your Maintenance Costs

A lush, perfect-looking lawn is a dream for most homeowners. It transforms an ordinary backyard into a place of elegance and serenity. While nothing beats the feel of real grass, there are some factors that you have to reconsider. Think of the amount of water, fertilizers, and gasoline, not to mention the time you spent on mowing, seeding, watering, fertilizing, and rolling to keep such lawn in pristine condition. If you’re not up to the challenges of maintaining natural grass, then it’s time to take a look at artificial grass. It lowers landscape maintenance and labor costs in many ways.

Here are some of the benefits of having artificial grass on your landscape:

  • No mowing. A lawn mower needs gas or electricity to run. But with artificial grass installed on your lawn, you’ll save hundreds of dollars’ worth of gas each year. That means lesser carbon footprint, too. A study shows that a gas-powered lawn mower spews more hydrocarbons than an average car per hour of use. An electric lawn mower is friendlier to the environment because it emits less carbon dioxide, but it also rakes up enormous electric costs.

  • No watering. According to Professor Paul Brown of the University of Arizona’s Department of Soil, Water, and Environmental Science, natural grass lawn requires four to five feet of water per unit area per year. No wonder two-thirds of the water consumption of a typical American household goes towards lawn watering. But if you opt for artificial turf, you’ll save as much as 70% on your water bill each month. You may even get some money back from your local water authority! Some cities offer tax rebates for every square foot of real grass you replace with faux grass. You helped conserve water after all, didn’t you?

  • No fertilizing. With artificial grass, you get green, lush lawn all year round without having to use fertilizers and pesticides. Again, that’s hundreds of dollars in potential savings. No guilt feeling, too since you won’t worry about fertilizers leaching into the ground or running into the sea.

  • No reseeding. Reseeding is a way to make your lawn look lush and healthy again. On the average, natural grass lawns require up to four reseedings per year to replace old and withered grass. A landscaping professional may charge from $90 to $170 per thousand-square foot of yard. That’s your average savings per reseeding season when you use the artificial one.

It’s true that the initial cost for installing faux or artificial grass is high. But when you consider the year-on-year savings on maintenance costs that you will enjoy, it makes a lot of sense to use it on your landscape.
