Enjoy Winter Outside with Portable Heaters
Your central heating system will keep your indoor space warm and cozy during the cold winter months. But what about your outdoor living space? If you have a portable heater, you can use your patio or deck during the cold winter months as well.
As the name itself suggests, portable heaters are heaters that can be easily moved from one place to another place. Portable heaters are less expensive than central heating units. They can use nearly all types of fuel - propane, natural gas, electricity, or kerosene.
These heaters work on the scientific principle of convection. Most portable heaters rely on radiant heat. The heater emits infrared rays to heat up the surrounding area and objects.
An advantage of using this heating system is its energy efficiency. A portable heater only heats a small area. However, safety should be an important consideration.
Since these units are light-weight, you can easily move them around and they provide heat where it is required the most. And unlike large space heaters, portable heaters require much less maintenance. This also makes them an attractive option. In fact, most minor problems can be sorted out. Portable heaters with attractive designs that complement your outdoor furniture are also available.
There are several kinds of portable heaters. Here is a quick overview.
Gas Heaters
These heaters have oxygen depletion sensors, which will shut off the heater whenever they detect a drop in oxygen levels and a rise in carbon monoxide levels.
Wood Burning Heater
You have to place these heaters on a fire resistant surface. They should also meet the standards of safety and security. Most wood burning heaters have a container for removing ash.
Kerosene Heaters
These space heaters need to be handled with care. You also need to ensure that the tank is never filled above the full mark. You can't use them with gasoline. Also avoid using them indoors.
Electric heaters
These are undoubtedly the most popular option but most of them require a wall outlet.
Safety first
While using a portable heater, make sure that the area surrounding the heater is free of paper and trash. You should have a smoke alarm. You should also keep inflammable items like solvents and paints away from the heater. And don't forget to get your heating system checked at least once a year.
A portable heating system is a must if you want to use your patio or deck in winter. While buying a portable heater make sure that it meets all safety standards. As far as possible, buy new units. They are safer and consume less energy.
