Whether your outdoor space is a small porch or patio, a city backyard or a broad stretch of countryside, now's the time to play, eat and relax under the sun and stars.

Just as you do indoors, let your lifestyle determine how you furnish this space. Ask yourself when and how your family uses it, and let the answers guide your selection of seating, overhead protection and the look of the space.

Since warm, sunny days turn cool in the evening, consider whether it's worth adding an outdoor fireplace or heater to extend the time you can enjoy being outdoors. If so, the options range from patio torches or pits to fireplaces. Explore what's new, and whether adding a heat source is worth the cost.

One option is an outdoor gas fireplace from Canada's Napoleon Fireplaces, which has dealers in Oakland, San Jose, Redwood City and other Bay Area locations. Some models offer 100 percent stainless-steel construction suited to the toughest outdoor environments. No venting or chimney is required, which makes such a fireplace suitable for any spot in your garden. You can use tile, stucco or stone to create a surround that matches or complements your home's exterior, too.

Another option is a patio heater. Some generate infrared rays that warm up objects, rather than the surrounding air. On some models, a decorative cast aluminum base hides a propane tank, and you can move the heater easily wherever it's needed.

For a contemporary look, a single torch flame or linear ethanol fire design can make an attractive addition. Placed on a table or positioned in pillars, such fixtures can add a lot of visual interest to your outdoor space at night.

But before making a selection, check your local fire and building codes to make certain the product that appeals to you complies with both.
