It’s time for new outdoor furniture

Want to save lots of money? Right now is the perfect time to shop for new patio furniture. The stores have their entire patio selections on sale as they are making way for snow blowers…gasp! I understand that shopping for patio furniture is fun for some, and stressful for others. Most people assume that shopping for outdoor tables and chairs is just like shopping for new fixtures for the inside of your home. This is partially true, but there are some very important things to consider when dealing with the outdoors. Here are my three items that I take with me whenever I go patio shopping

A Tape Measure

Too often, homeowners purchase a set and then realize that it won’t fit in your space. The truth is, patio sets are getting bigger and bigger. Make sure that you’ve measured the entire available space at home before you leave for the store. I like to start my shopping at locations that offer a wide variety of patio options because I love to see what else is available in the complimentary accessories and pieces. I always find one extra ‘must-have’ and by knowing the size of my space, I know what will fit and what won’t!

A Friend

While a second opinion is always a good thing, bringing a friend patio shopping has another practical application. Have your shopping buddy sit opposite to you at the ends of the table. Measure how far away the chairs actually are when you are both sitting comfortably. Then both of you stand up at the same time and measure how far apart the chairs are once you’ve stood up. You might be surprised, but you’ve probably added several feet to the amount of patio space your furniture really needs. There is nothing worse than having a great set, and not being able to easily use it.

A Magnet

There are more amazing pieces and sets available today then ever before because we all want outdoor rooms. Unfortunately, most of our outdoor rooms get wet. Knowing what your furniture is made of will help you take care of it for years to come. This is where the magnet comes in. Place your magnet on the exposed metal, even on the metal under the wicker style weave. If the magnet doesn’t stick, this is an aluminum set, perfect for handling almost any outdoor weather conditions. If the magnet sticks, then this is either a steel or iron set. These patio pieces are a great economical option for most homeowners however, if you don’t protect them, they will rust in heavy rain. Make sure you purchase proper covers to ensure the longevity of your set.
