Let’s leave the February blahs behind and look forward to summer, relaxing on the deck or in the backyard with family and friends. Let’s warm up with a preview of some of the latest trends in outdoor furniture and decor, featuring a variety of colours and styles for spaces of all sizes.

One of the stories for the upcoming season is all about vibrant colours on the cushions — you will see reds, yellows, bright blues and greens, perhaps in bold stripes — combined with resin wicker in a darker colour, much like espresso. The style of the furniture is very clean and fairly minimal, with an emphasis on the shape and proportions.

“We have much deeper seating, generous arms, a cleaner shape, and even with the generous proportions of some of the pieces, we still have some options that are suited for small spaces,” says Tracy Platt, brand development manager for Canadian Tire.

There also is a story with a romantic theme, featuring pastels, florals, greyed colours, curved arms and other architectural-looking details on the pieces. You will see some finishes with highlights of copper as well as a lot of mixed materials, such as teak wood with dark resin wicker or metal and woven wicker sections mixed together.

Don’t have room for an entire patio set, or prefer to mix and match? You can find pieces that are available separately and buy the ones that suit your space, needs and style. For example, maybe you have room for just two club chairs and a small table on the front porch, or perhaps you want to have a sectional and mix it with some chairs from another set.

“When you’re mixing different sets, you want to have something that ties together, so colour is one of the big things to think about,” says Platt.

For instance, cushion covers in similar colours can be a great way to unify pieces from different sets. Also consider the styles of the furniture when you mix and match. A chair with curved arms and mixed materials can look great with a clean and simple set, rather than putting two busy styles together.

You can mix and match fireside pieces, too. There are high fire-tables with enough room to pull up chairs around them. They have a cover in the centre so that you can use the table for dining and later remove the cover to enjoy the warmth and ambience of a fire. There also are lower fire-tables, which you could use in place of a coffee table.

Alternatives to propane and wood-burning tables include smaller wood-burning fire bowls, which you could use just for LED candles instead, or you could put LED candles in a lantern. Solar lights remain popular too, including solar pendant lamps and table lamps.

“It’s all about creating an outdoor room and taking full advantage of summer,” says Platt.

Let’s hope this winter ends soon.
