Top Trends for Outdoor Furniture in Summer, 2015

Summer is just around the corner and there is no time like right now to liven up our outdoor spaces, so that life outdoors can be as easy, comfortable and stunning as it can. If you are thinking of making a small or more ambitious change, these are some trends you will undoubtedly be seeing lots of in the warmest months of 2015:

  • World Styles: Gardens and outdoor sitting areas are looking a lot more international these days, with many designers opting for a mix of Moroccan lanterns, Oriental-inspired furniture pieces, Mediterranean fabrics and gorgeous Thai handcrafted accessories. The result is a warm and colorful ambience that highlights the joy of travel and discovery. In line with the global embrace in design is a penchant for free trade and ethical products, and a passion for locally produced furniture pieces, arts and crafts.

  • Bold hues: Some of the colors we will be seeing in outdoor cushions and accessories include deep purple, coffee, maroon, steel gray, bold greens and rosette. Colors lean towards dark and serious; we won’t be seeing a lot of youthful yellow or orange this year. Beige is another guaranteed winner this year. We will be seeing it in all its hues; champagne and apricot tones will also be visible. Many furniture fairs this year saw the creation of earthy ambiences where dark greens and greys were married to beige hues for an elegant, earth-inspired setting.

  • Prints: Woven prints will be big once again. Some of the most popular designs include flower brush strokes, abstract shapes, gentle ombre variations, and wild flower prints.

  • Wooden furniture: Teak, eucalyptus and Sapelli are just some of the top grade wood which can withstand the sunniest and rainiest of days alike. These and other outdoor accessories (such as beanbags, cushions and hammocks) will be covered with dust-repellent, weatherproof materials. Outdoor carpets for areas that are sunny by day but which cool up by night, make a perfect nestling area for adults and children alike. Some interesting complementary pieces have been observed at some of the world’s top furniture fairs; in Milan, for instance, one big hit were the knitted armchair arms covers, designed to soften up the feel of wood. Pair them with decked flooring if you can; it may represent a small investment, but it will undoubtedly raise the value of your home and make outdoor living so much more appealing. If a bigger renovation is out of the question financially, speak to your bank manager about mortgages specifically catered to home renovations – they promise pretty good rates and hardly make a dent to your balance, especially if viewed in the long run.

  • Clustered tables: Another new feature seen at the Salone de Mobile in Milan were clustered outdoor tables  i.e. instead of gracing an outdoor terrace with just one dining table, two or three tables can be joined together. We saw square wooden tables paired with round tables and stools, making for an attractive piece reminiscent of what one might find in a chic modernistic living room.

  •  Hanging seats: These seats jazz up a garden our wooden terrace with a hammock, yet provide more stability for the not-so-brave. Hanging seats in teak and other traditional outdoor materials work beautifully with traditional fabric-covered sofas and lounge chairs, yet add a very summery vibe to a terrace or garden (we guarantee that your hanging seat will probably be everybody’s favorite).

  • Make it low: Very low sofas and coffee tables are once again all the rage. While these may not be all that practical in an indoor living room, they certainly suit the outdoors. If your terrace is decked, throw a few cushions and beanbags around to ensure everyone is at the same height.

  • Natural wood: Natural wood has been in vogue for the past couple of years and the trend isn’t showing any signs of cooling off. Make sure you have at least a few wooden features in your outdoor relaxation area; these could be wooden stools or a trendy chair. If you have the space, why not opt for an outdoor wooden chaise lounge?

  • Sail shades: Top companies offer clients an array of different styles and shapes of sail shades, which are easy to open and close and which make for an elegant way to shade us from the sun while affording the beauty of an open space, natural light and fresh air. White is the color to go for; don’t go any darker than cream.

  • New rattan designs: If you love rattan and have had the same chairs, sofa or table in your outdoor setting, it might be the ideal time for change. There are many new patterns and shapes available; check out these beautiful items from Dedon in Germany.
