HGTV's Kitchen Cousins cook up renovation advice at NARI Home Improvement Show

Anthony Carrino and John Colaneri, known as the Kitchen Cousins, routinely improve people’s lives by improving their homes as hosts of HGTV’s “Cousins Undercover.” But when they helped victims of Hurricane Sandy in the Kitchen Cousins’ native New Jersey, the experience touched Carrino’s heart.

The Kitchen Cousins surprised a couple – both first responders – whose home was ruined by five feet of water during the storm. As part of their new show “Cousins Undercover,” Carrino and Colaneri led a team of volunteers in renovating the water-logged homes in just three days and then watching the excitement during the big reveal.

“It felt good to help people in New Jersey,” Carrino said in a recent home interview.

The Kitchen Cousins are coming to Cleveland to appear at the NARI Home Improvement Show at the I-X Center Thursday, Jan. 23 through Sunday, Jan. 26. Their talks are Saturday, Jan. 25 at noon, 1:30 and 3 p.m.

The NARI show is the place to start dreaming and planning spring home improvement projects. It’s an opportunity for homeowners to meet local remodelers and home improvement professionals.

Look for these highlights:

The Ultimate Outdoor Escape, created by Land Creations Landscaping of Columbia Station, is a display including a multi-level backyard patio, outdoor kitchen, hot tub, water features and outdoor shower, all surrounded by evergreens and ornamental shrubs.

The Neighborhood Trends Display, designed and constructed by Artistic Renovations of Seven Hills, is made up of several rooms that illustrate home designs popular in Northeast Ohio, such as downtown condos, traditional 1920s homes and 1950s suburban residences.

Six custom-made dog houses, designed and built by students from the Lorain County Joint Vocational School, will be displayed. Show attendees can bid on the dog houses, and proceeds help the Cleveland Animal Protective League.

Carrino, 35, and Colaneri will answer audience members’ questions about remodeling projects during their relaxed presentation. “We like to interact with our audience,” Carrino said.

Carrino and Colaneri, 33, first gained a television audience as hosts of “Kitchen Cousins,” the HGTV show that let viewers watch as the cousins took kitchens from boring to fabulous. After two seasons of “Kitchen Cousins,” the men wanted to take their renovation talents beyond the kitchen, so “Cousins” ceased production and “Cousins Undercover” was born, Carrino said.
