Bermuda shutters turn outdoor space into ultimate Tiki hut

Michael Brock of Hilton Head Island was fed up with the dated look of his outside kitchen area and decided to do something about it. Here’s his story. 

THE PROJECT

We love the outside kitchen area of our backyard. We call it our Tiki hut and we spend a lot of time out here grilling and chilling by the pool. I’ve never been crazy about the lattice trim. It wasn’t functional (it offered little to no shade) and frankly it didn’t look all that good. It was also hard to paint because of the southern exposure.

HOW IT STARTED

I got the idea to install Bermuda shutters from a rental house I own in Bermuda Pointe. The shutters, I thought, would enhance the Tiki hut theme. 

After demolition and a lot of measuring, I ordered eight extra-wide custom shutter panels and 12 shutter extension arms. I bought materials to build the new framework and painted all the wood pieces before installation. The outdoor space is an octagon and the shutters would cover three sides which made for some fun angle cuts. 

My sons and I assembled the frame on the ground and, once it was lifted into place, fastened it to the house and hung the panel sections using stainless steel piano hinges. The shutters on each side were paired together for added strength against wind. The extension arm hardware was attached to the framework and to the back of each shutter panel section. 

A FAMILY AFFAIR 

I would not have been able to do this project without the help of my four sons. My sons, who are all pretty handy do-it-yourselfers, were visiting for Thanksgiving and helped me with the heavy lifting and helped make sure everything was securely attached. We were able to accomplish all of this by the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and it’s a project we’re very proud of.
