Saving our Watershed through Organic Landscaping

Saving our Watershed through Organic Landscaping

You have no doubt heard a lot about “going organic” in recent years. Though it might seem like a trend, using organic methods in many areas of your life can have a lasting impact on our environment and on our own health. This might mean eating food that doesn’t have pesticides on it or using chemical-free laundry soap.

We, at DeWitt Landscaping, strongly believe in organic practices. For our business, going organic is about taking care of our community and the land we live on. This means taking good care of the soil, the land and our local watershed.

Our Watershed

A watershed can be loosely defined as an area of land where all of the water that is under it or drains off of it goes into the same place. Our watershed flows from Mt Rainer and the Cascade Range, through our farmland and foothills and through Puyallup. It encompasses the Puyallup River as well as many other creeks, rivers and streams that all flow into the Puget Sound. Here is a fun map of our watershed.

This means that places downstream of Puyallup and the surrounding area are affected by whatever we dump in the water and on the ground. Chemicals, pesticides, fertilizers and other products we use in our landscapes seep into the groundwater and become part of the watershed. The Puget Sound and other bodies of water are affected by our actions. Wetlands, estuaries and other ecosystems- and all the plants and animals that live in them-  are connected to what we do with our own front lawns.

Our Methods

So it can be prudent to examine our methods and processes and make sure they are effective and take into account the world around us. Our landscaping company has switched to organic methods, whenever possible. We have several products and techniques in place to make sure that your lawn and landscape are still beautiful and healthy without any harmful chemicals.

We use certified organic pesticides and herbicides to help with weed, disease and insect control. We also use a flame torch to get rid of newly emerged weed seeds. We use organic mulch to suppress weeds and prevent soil erosion. We also apply compost to feed plants and build the soil. We fertilize lawns with grass clippings. Making use of what could be considered “yard waste” is both environmental AND economic!

We believe that it is better for the people and plants at home as well! Organic products are safe for children, pets and wildlife. They don’t leave any potentially harmful residues and they help plants to stay healthier by increasing the microbes in the soil as well as plants’ own defense mechanisms.
